Conservation

For our part, we have chosen to partner with Indigo Seahorse Adventure. This community-led eco-tourism project is aimed at protecting the three endemic seahorse species and the seagrass meadows in which they live within the greater Vilanculos bay area. The initiative was started to create awareness around the importance of biodiversity for the entire seascape on which the community depends (living mostly as subsidence fishing communities within the area) and to promote protection over poaching – enabling the community to co-exist and thrive with and through these amazing little creatures.
We encourage all our guests to take part in the Indigo Seahorse Adventure which comprises a guided traditional dhow tour in the Mangalisse bay. Guests get to experience a traditional sailing dhow trip out to the seagrass meadows and to snorkel with local guides to find the seahorses in their natural habitat. Seahorses are small marine fish in the genus Hippocampus, of between 5-15 cm in size and which swim upright using their dorsal and pectoral fins to maneuver. There are less than 50 species in the entire world – 3 of which are endemic to our area. The approximately 4-hour trip includes a home-cooked lunch of blue swimmer crab and matapa, typical to the local fishing community.
It is a magical experience to snorkel in the warm shallow waters of this beautiful bay and to experience these little creatures that have remained essentially unchanged for more than 13 million years (humans have only been around for about 350 thousand years)……
The proceeds of the tour go to the community to support alternative incomes for the former poachers and their neighbours. Doing your bit has surely never been easier or more enjoyable. In addition, we make a financial contribution to the Indigo Seahorse Adventure for every guest night booked at Saudade. We are delighted to be part of this tourism for good initiative that will ensure we are able to co-exist peacefully and in prosperity with the seahorses for the next 13 million years……
